The short version

DreamCloud is a coil hybrid. Purple is a grid hybrid.

DreamCloud and Purple are both hybrids, but the layer between you and the support core is fundamentally different. DreamCloud uses memory foam and gel foam on top of pocket coils — a familiar premium-hybrid construction. Purple uses its proprietary GelFlex Grid (a stretchy polymer lattice) on top of foam and pocket coils — a construction nobody else makes because Purple holds the patent.

The result is two completely different surface feels: DreamCloud is "supportive plush" in the way most premium hybrids are. Purple feels like nothing else — the grid flexes under pressure points (hips, shoulders) and stays firm under flat surfaces (lower back, calves). Some people love this. Some people don't. The five-minute showroom test is non-negotiable for Purple specifically.

Feel

"Supportive plush" — familiar premium-hybrid feel. Slight contour, fast response when you change positions.

Unique to Purple — the grid "flexes" under pressure points (hips, shoulders) and stays firm everywhere else. Feels like nothing else.

Firmness range

Medium-soft (Ultra) to medium-firm (Classic). Four models.

Medium to medium-firm across the line. The thicker the grid, the softer the feel.

Sleeper fit

Back, stomach, combo sleepers. Couples with weight differences. Hot sleepers.

Side sleepers with shoulder/hip pressure points. People who run very hot. People who don't like memory foam "hug."

Performance
Cooling

Good — coil airflow + breathable top. Doesn't trap heat.

Strong airflow advantage — the open grid structure gives heat more room to move away from the body.

Pressure relief

Good — gel foam contours at hips and shoulders.

Excellent — the grid collapses at pressure points and holds firm elsewhere. The clearest advantage Purple has over traditional foams.

Edge support

Better — pocket coils carry weight to the edge.

Good on Hybrid models. Softer on the Original Purple.

Motion isolation

Good — pocket coils move independently.

Excellent — the grid absorbs motion at the layer where it happens.

Weight (queen)

The grid, explained

What the GelFlex Grid actually does

Purple GelFlex Grid material close-up — purple polymer lattice
Purple's GelFlex Grid — the patented polymer lattice that defines the brand's signature feel.

Purple's headline material is a 2-to-4-inch top layer made of Hyper-Elastic Polymer arranged in a column-and-wall lattice. Picture a giant grid of soft rubber squares with hollow spaces between them. When you lie on it, the columns directly under your hips and shoulders buckle and collapse — softening exactly where you need pressure relief. The columns under flatter parts of your body (lower back, calves, head) stay standing — keeping support where you need it.

The practical result is that Purple feels firmer or softer depending on what you're doing on it. Lying on your back: medium feel. Lying on your side: softer at the hips, firmer at the waist. Sitting up: pretty firm. This is not a marketing claim; it's a real, physically observable property of the lattice structure. It's also why Purple is so polarizing — for some people it's the most intuitively-right mattress they've ever slept on. For others, the grid feel is too unfamiliar to be relaxing.

You cannot learn whether you're in the first group or the second group from reviews. Lie on it for at least five minutes at the showroom. Lie on it on your side, your back, and your preferred sleep position. Get up, walk around, come back, and lie on it again. The grid feel either grows on you or doesn't, and 30 seconds isn't enough to know.

Price tier

Why Purple costs more

Purple sits a tier above DreamCloud on price. A queen DreamCloud Premier is around $999; a queen Purple Restore Hybrid is significantly more. The difference comes from two places: the GelFlex Grid material itself is expensive to manufacture (it's pressure-molded polymer, not foam), and Purple's brand positioning is premium-luxury rather than premium-mid. The cost reflects what you're buying — patented material, denser construction, heavier overall build — and whether that material is worth the premium for your body is the actual question, not whether Purple is overpriced.

We don't recommend Purple by default and we don't recommend DreamCloud by default. We recommend the bed your body responds to. If the GelFlex Grid is exactly what your hips and shoulders have been missing, the price difference is worth it. If you can't tell the difference on the showroom floor, DreamCloud will sleep great and cost less.

Who picks which

Who's a Purple sleeper, who's a DreamCloud sleeper

People who end up loving Purple

  • Side sleepers with specific hip or shoulder pressure points that traditional foam doesn't relieve.
  • Hot sleepers who've tried gel-infused foams and still wake up sweating.
  • Light sleepers with a restless partner — the grid absorbs motion at the source.
  • People who've slept on a Purple at a friend's house or a hotel and noticed it felt different in a good way.
  • People with a back-injury history where the grid's variable support genuinely helps.

People who end up loving DreamCloud

  • Back and combo sleepers who want a familiar premium-hybrid feel.
  • Budget-conscious shoppers in the $649–$1,999 queen range.
  • Couples with weight differences — the hybrid build holds up to heavier sleepers without sagging on one side.
  • People who tried memory-foam beds (Tempur-Pedic, Nectar) and felt "stuck" — DreamCloud is more responsive.
  • People buying a guest-room mattress that needs to be a safe choice for an unknown sleeper preference.
Trying both

Side-by-side at our Lexington showroom

The Lexington showroom on Nicholasville Road has DreamCloud and Purple Hybrid models on the floor at the same time. We put a DreamCloud Premier next to a Purple Restore Hybrid so you can lie on each for five minutes and let your body do the deciding. Bring your partner if you can — Purple in particular is a polarizing material and you don't want to find out at delivery that one of you can't sleep on it.

Richmond, Georgetown, London, and Somerset rotate Purple's most-popular models. Call ahead if you want to test a specific Purple model at one of the smaller showrooms. The drive's worth it once if it saves you the wrong purchase.

Ask how delivery, setup, and old-mattress-removal options work for either brand in your address area. Manufacturer trial terms differ by brand and purchase path; ask how Mattress Overstock handles the exact order before you choose.

Frequently asked

DreamCloud vs Purple FAQ

What customers ask us in the showroom and in support emails.

Which is better, DreamCloud or Purple?

It depends on what you sleep on now and what feels right when you lie on each. DreamCloud is a coil-and-foam hybrid in the premium-mid tier with a more traditional feel. Purple is a GelFlex Grid hybrid in the premium-luxury tier with a feel that's genuinely unlike any other mattress on the market. Most people who pick DreamCloud do so because Purple's grid feel didn't grow on them in the showroom. Most people who pick Purple do so because the grid solved a specific pressure-point problem traditional foam didn't.

Is Purple firmer or softer than DreamCloud?

Purple's feel is variable. Under your hips and shoulders the grid collapses and feels softer. Under flatter parts of your body (lower back, calves) it stays firm. DreamCloud's feel is more uniform — medium-soft to medium-firm depending on model. If you tried a 1-to-10 firmness scale, a DreamCloud Premier and a Purple Restore Hybrid would both rate around 6, but the experience is different.

Does Purple sleep cooler than DreamCloud?

Slightly, yes — Purple's open grid structure has more airflow than any foam or hybrid surface on the market. DreamCloud's coil layer and breathable cashmere top are also good for cooling. If you sleep very hot, Purple has the best structural cooling. If you sleep moderately warm, either is fine.

Which has the longer trial period?

DreamCloud lists a 365-night mattress trial. Purple's standard trial is 100 nights. If trial length matters to your decision, ask the showroom to walk through the written terms for the exact mattress you are considering — return window, pickup handling, required support setup, and any brand-specific conditions can all affect how the policy works in practice.

Can I try both DreamCloud and Purple in Kentucky?

Yes — our Lexington showroom on Nicholasville Road has DreamCloud and Purple Hybrid models on the floor at the same time. No appointment needed. Richmond, Georgetown, London, and Somerset rotate Purple models; call ahead if you want a specific Purple model on a specific showroom.

Is Purple worth the extra money over DreamCloud?

Only if your body responds to the GelFlex Grid in a way it doesn't respond to traditional foam. The grid is genuinely different — for some people it's the most pressure-point-relieving mattress they've ever slept on. For others it feels strange and never grows on them. The price premium is real (Purple sits a tier above DreamCloud), and only you can decide whether it's worth it. Five minutes on the showroom floor will answer this faster than any review.

Which has better edge support?

DreamCloud has slightly better edge support on most models — the pocket coils run to the edge. The Purple Hybrid lines are good on edge support; the all-foam Original Purple is softer at the edge.

Which is better for side sleepers?

Purple — by a noticeable margin if you have specific shoulder or hip pressure-point pain. The grid collapses exactly where you need it to. If your side sleeping is comfortable on a typical premium hybrid, DreamCloud is also good for you and costs less.

Five minutes on each.
